Article: West's only home-state loss came in Charleston Civic Center's opening game

IN a glorious basketball career at West Virginia University, Jerry West played only two of his team's 93 games over three seasons in his home county.

The future NBA star, logo model, coach and executive didn't disappoint the Kanawha County locals in those two dates at the Charleston Civic Center ... even if he felt disappointment himself.

That pain came when the 6-foot-3 former East Bank High star and his fourth-ranked WVU teammates lost 75-72 to Virginia in the first basketball game in Civic Center history, on Dec. 13, 1958.
