Negative home equity in the I.E. approaches 45 percent

In the San Bernardino-Ontario-Riverside area, 379,037, or 44.8 percent, of all properties with a mortgage had negative equity as of Dec. 31, according to newly released data from Santa Ana-based First American CoreLogic. An additional 34,397 mortgages in the region, or 4.1 percent, were near negative equity. On a national level, more than 8.3 million U.S. mortgages, or 20 percent of all properties with a mortgage, had negative equity. California ranked first with more than 1.9 million borrowers having negative equity, followed by Florida (1.3 million) and Texas (498,000).
