Article: Region's jobless rate may hit 8.5 percent in '09

Western Pennsylvania could lose 25,000 more jobs this year as the unemployment rate climbs as high as 8.5 percent, PNC Financial Services Group Inc. Chief Economist Stuart Hoffman predicted Tuesday.

The forecast follows a state report that joblessness in the seven- county region jumped to 6.5 percent in January, up from 6.2 percent a month earlier. About 89,000 workers were jobless.

The federal government reported last week that unemployment rose to 8.1 percent in February, the highest jobless rate in 25 years.

Hoffman said Western Pennsylvania's relatively stable economy likely will prevent a higher jobless rate.
