When you're standing in line for green beer and an "Everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day" button this Tuesday, consider this: When did St. Patrick's Day become such a huge holiday?

OK, so it's not really a holiday. Yet it has all the hallmarks of one: People take off from work, special meals are organized, adult beverages are consumed and overindulgence is tradition. Like Thanksgiving, only without the turkey.

A similarly festive pattern of "eat, drink and repeat" comes up again on opening day next month when, on April 10, thousands of Brewers fans will get together to grill bratwurst, drink beer from funnels and, eventually, find their way in to see the game.
