A MARKET town was engulfed in smoke as up to 30 firefighters
battled to contain a fire in a derelict building.
The blaze took hold in a partly demolished former abattoir in
Station Road, Thirsk, North Yo rkshire, yesterday morning.
The fire was so fierce at its height that smoke could be seen in
Northallerton, more than nine miles away.
Five fire crews from Thirsk, Northallerton, Harrogate and Ripon,
with an aerial ladder, were sent to tackle the fire at 8.05am.
Ian Hodgson, watch manager at Thirsk fire station, said: "The
fire was a pure accident.
"There are workmen on site and the blaze was started by a workman
with an oxyacetylene torch.
