Article: Rate hike request draws heat: ; 651 residents signed petitions, 45 wrote letters describing hard times on low incomes

Appalachian Power's request for a 43 percent rate increase is generating a lot of heat from citizens and large consumers of electricity.

Since the American Electric Power subsidiary filed its $442 million rate hike request on March 9, the state Public Service Commission has received petitions opposing the increase with 651 signatures plus letters written by 45 individuals.

The petitions ask that the Public Service Commission deny Appalachian's request "because of the undue hardship of this request that families will endure." Tom Lester of Verner, Jenny Picard of Man and Vada Kidd of Walton submitted the petitions.
