Article: Koonce's athletic-director dream comes true at UWM

George Koonce started thinking about being an athletic director a long time ago, back in his senior year in college at East Carolina.

He kept that goal in mind even during his days as a linebacker with the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s.

On Tuesday, the 40-year-old Koonce landed his dream job when he was named athletic director at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee. Koonce is scheduled to begin on April 1, succeeding Bud Haidet, who is retiring after 21 years at the east side campus.

"I really couldn't put it into words," Koonce said of his feelings after being informed of his hiring by UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago. "I always wanted to be more than just a football player.
