Jeff Wagner's first colonoscopy at age 48 showed several benign
tumors, called polyps, and a larger, precancerous tumor.
The doctor removed them, but when a follow-up colonoscopy showed
more polyps, Wagner knew he couldn't just wait for them to reappear
year after year.
"I wanted to be proactive," said Wagner, 51, of McCandless. "I
didn't want to go through this every couple of years, not knowing."
Four months ago, Wagner, who heads the hardware facilities and
support center at Carnegie Mellon University, became one of the
first patients to join a University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
clinical trial to test a potential vaccine to prevent colon cancer.
