Frank Ward Durgin, "pioneer funeral director of Berkeley and a resident of the city for more than 40 years" died March 20, 1934, 75 years ago. In 1887 he came from Maine to San Francisco, then moved to Berkeley five years later, "where he established a furniture business and became the first funeral director." He lived at 1165 Shattuck Ave.

"Mr. Durgin was one of the pioneers in all the early day activities of Berkeley," stated an article in the Berkeley Gazette, active in the YMCA, and a member of local fraternal lodges.
