Alan Hollingsworth, who has died aged 87, was not only the oldest former member of the editorial staff of this newspaper - and certainly one of the most distinguished - but a Grimsby man, far away, and ever eager to keep in touch with his past.

There was a time when he and I corresponded at tremendous pace, letters replied to by return and at length, often three times in a week!

Alan was born in 1922. His father, Cpt Harold Hollingsworth, who'd served with the Lincolnshire Yeomanry in Palestine, was extremely well known with Consolidated Fisheries in the old days.
