Article: Comedy Festival promises to widen the net

PROMOTERS behind a controversial "breakaway" comedy festival at the Edinburgh Fringe have defended the revival of the venture for a second year.

The Edinburgh Comedy Festival will be opened up to all venues, promoters and performers this year in an attempt to rebuff criticism that it was being run as a "cartel".

The four biggest Fringe venues launched the event last August, insisting their "festival within a festival" was needed to increase audiences and nurture new talent.

They are also adamant a move to charge other venues and performers GBP 500 a show to get into their programme offers good value for money.
