The recession continues to bite the tri-state economy, with at
least three more firms reporting job cuts as manufacturing activity
grinds to a snail's pace nationwide.
Bodine Electric Company's Peosta, Iowa, plant has trimmed its
payroll by about 30 jobs through voluntary layoffs, while Edwards
Cast Stone Co., of Dubuque, last week issued temporary layoffs to 23
workers. Meanwhile, The Hodge Company, also of Dubuque, has cut 140
positions at its North Carolina operation, and as many as 10 more
between the warehouser's Dubuque and Quad Cities sites.
Officials at all three companies say the downturn is taking its
toll on business, but they expressed hope that better times lie
ahead.
