LOGAN At a guardhouse at the entrance of one of Massey Energys
surface mines near Ethel, Mark Bias was imagining a future in which
work at the countys surface mines had stopped. What they dont
understand is that it isnt just the coal miners its going to shut
down, said Bias, 43, whose job is operating a coal loader. Its going
to shut down the Wal-Marts. Its going to shut down the Go-Marts. Its
going to shut down the Advanced Auto Parts. Last week, critics of
mountaintop removal cheered a move by the federal Environmental
Protection Agency to review hundreds of surface mining permits. The
EPA has singled out two mining operations in West Virginia,
including the Reylas Surface Mine in Logan ...
