The defence sector brings billions of pounds and thousands of
jobs to the North-East. Business Editor Owen McAteer visited the
annual conference of support group Northern Defence Industries to
find out how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are
benefiting
AN introduction at a defence trade show was to change the future
of Springwell Precision Engineering.
Several years ago Philip Gatens, who formed the company, in
Washington, Wearside, with his brother, Peter, in 1996, was visiting
the Defence Systems and Equipment International Exhibition, in
London, in 2001 to see if their small business could pick up some
leads for work.
