Article: Police chief's ouster sparks controversy

Police Chief George Morteo walked into the Guttenberg (Iowa) City Hall council chambers Tuesday afternoon to rousing applause, shaking hands with a capacity crowd before pulling up a chair with his attorney. One hour later, he walked out of the room and into his first moments as a private citizen, free of his badge.

The Guttenberg City Council fired Morteo, the city's police chief since 2001, by a 4-1 vote during a special meeting filled with heated comments and calls for Mayor Jim Solomon's resignation.

Solomon cited Morteo's "unacceptable performance" without elaborating in motioning for his dismissal.
