William L. Purvis, 71, who had been a technical writer and editor
for the Energy Department since 2004, died March 22 at his home in
Alexandria. He had lung cancer.
Before joining the Energy Department, Mr. Purvis was a vice
president of policy and a senior writer at what is now known as the
National Mining Association, where he began working in 1984.
William Leonard Purvis was a native of Tampa and a 1960
journalism graduate of Florida Southern College in Lakeland. After
college, he worked as a reporter for the St. Petersburg Times and
the Gannett News Service, among other publications.
