Article: Medevac reform bills dying in Senate

Proposals to reform or further investigate Maryland's medevac system are being turned away in the state Senate, with politicians swayed by the belief that the current system is respected worldwide.

Heading into the 90-day legislative session, there was much angst about the medevac operation, following a critical audit and a fatal crash last fall. But the General Assembly is heading toward keeping the system intact and speeding up the purchase of new helicopters.

By a 32-14 vote, the Senate yesterday defeated a bill that would have delayed purchasing new helicopters for a year so the state could further study the future needs of the medevac system.
