Less than a year and half after becoming an independent company, Metavante Technologies Inc. is being acquired by a competitor in a nearly $3 billion deal that analysts say makes sense for the company but will end up costing the Milwaukee area a corporate headquarters.

Fidelity National Information Services Inc. and Metavante Wednesday said Fidelity would buy the Brown Deer-based financial technology provider in an all-stock transaction that creates the largest company of its kind -- as measured by annual revenue -- in the industry.

Metavante's top executive, Frank Martire, will relocate to Fidelity National's headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., to become CEO of Fidelity.
