Article: Gray wolf delisting is challenged Wildlife groups say move is premature

The Humane Society of the United States and other wildlife protection groups say they will challenge a decision by the federal government to remove the gray wolf from protections of the Endangered Species Act.

The groups said it was premature to delist the wolf, saying that wolves have returned to only parts of the Great Lakes states and that the states need to produce sound management plans before protections are removed.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said last month that the agency was sticking with a decision of the Bush administration to remove the wolf from the Endangered Species list in the western Great Lakes, including Wisconsin, and portions of the northern Rocky Mountains.
