Article: Port of New Orleans braces as U.S. cargo figures fall but finds bright spot with cruise business

Gary LaGrange's recent customer call at the Port of Miami left him with a little bit of relief. The shipping industry isn't doing so hot in Miami either.

When the Port of New Orleans president and CEO visited the Port of Miami Terminal Operating Co. container terminal, he noticed there were no ships at the terminal and "no one working."

"Granted it's one snapshot on one day, but everything we're going through at the port ... is prevalent all over," LaGrange said.

Foreign trade figures recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau show American exports decreased 5.7 percent to $124.9 billion in January from $132.5 billion in December. Imports, which are much of what Port of New Orleans ...
