In the world of humane shelters, Victoria R. Wellens became known
as every animal's best friend.
Wellens, executive director of the Wisconsin Humane Society, came
up with the idea of buying out the Puppy Haven Kennels in Markesan
last year. An unprecedented move, it attracted national attention
and gave 1,630 dogs a chance at a new life.
One lucky dog ended up in foster care at Wellens' home.
"She brought home a little apricot poodle that was pregnant,"
said her husband, Jim Polansky. Found in filthy conditions, Dolly --
also called Snorky by Wellens -- gave birth to her last litter under
their kitchen table.
The puppies went to new homes as soon as they were old enough,
