Article: Government as the arbiter of all things: ; Legislators will now manage individual behavior

THE Legislature is on a health kick worthy of Dudley Do-Right, the Canadian Mountie cartoon character whose common sense was overshadowed by his unshakable commitment to the straight and narrow.

Now, there's nothing wrong with a righteous path. In fact, it's to be admired in individual behavior. But an overly punctilious government carries with it a sense that governance has shifted from Big Brother to Nagging Mother.

The argument by those who favor requiring some restaurants to post calorie information on their menus goes like this:

West Virginians are too heavy and unhealthy, so having the calorie information readily available will cause us to think before we bite.
