I was surprised to see a marine scientist, Dr Charles Lethbridge,
claim that CO2 "cannot enter water" (letter, March 25).
This flies in the face of established science and well- known
mechanisms for the absorption and dissolving of CO2 in water (see,
for example, the paper "Oceanic sinks for CO2", by J A Raven and P G
Falkowski (1999) in the journal Plant, Cell and Environment, Volume
22, pages 741-755).
Dr Lethbridge's comments also make little sense in relation to
the theory quoted in that paper that about 30 per cent of
anthropogenic CO2 emissions since the Industrial Revolution have
been absorbed by the oceans - I have ...
