Article: Senate committee in Md. approves Preakness proposal

A Senate committee approved a proposal Thursday afternoon that
would allow the state to use its eminent domain power to keep the
Preakness Stakes in Maryland or to buy rights to the race and other
properties owned by Magna Entertainment Corp.
The bill (SB 1072) could come before the full chamber today, as
the Senate meets in afternoon session. Legislative leaders have said
the bill is likely to pass, and the House is expected to begin work
on a similar bill (HB 1578) Friday morning.
The bills would give the state authority to seize the rights to
Preakness, as well as several other properties owned by Magna
Entertainment, the Canadian gaming company that is attempting to
sell its assets and ...
