Article: New Jersey Supreme Court says lemon law applies to online car sales

A state consumer fraud law applies to online auto sales, the New Jersey Supreme Court has ruled.

A Missouri resident saw an online auction for a vintage Chevrolet Corvette and bid $13,651. He spoke with the seller, who assured him the car was in good working condition and could be driven from the seller's location in New Jersey to Missouri.

But when the buyer won the auction, he learned that the car's frame was rusted nearly in half, the headlights didn't work and the seats were ripped in various places, among many other problems. He had to ship the car to his home and pay more than $40,000 in repairs.

He sued under New Jersey's consumer fraud law, and a trial judge awarded him damages, ...
