Sir, New Zealand ranks seventh in the OECD for prison population,
on a par with Mexico, with 155 prisoners per 100,000 population.
The USA has 701, over three times its nearest rival, Poland,
while Australia has 115.
Four per cent of prison inmates are women; 44 per cent identify
themselves as Maori.
