It was today in 1927 that Mae West, the legendary screen siren,
was sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity. She had written and
was performing in a play called Sex. I think the title alone might
have led even the most culturally naive police officer to suspect
naughtiness was afoot but it took the New York Police Department
almost a year to decide to raid the premises. By then, 325,000
people had watched it, including many police officers presumably
checking just how obscene it was. Miss West was released from jail
two days early, declaring 'This is the only time that I ever got
anything for good behaviour!'
I once played Mae West in a revue and I have to say I loved it.
