Article: Union leery of Pittsburgh ordering counseling for police officers after shootings

No one can force Pittsburgh police officers to talk about the swirl of grief and anger they feel following the killings of three comrades, a top union official said Thursday.

But mandatory mental health counseling could begin as early as next week if enough grieving officers don't willingly seek help, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said when asked how police are coping with the April 4 slayings in Stanton Heights.

"We're considering mandatory counseling just to ensure that they're receiving the attention that they need to," Ravenstahl said, adding the city is using counselors from the University of Pennsylvania.
