A huge research facility that towers over the Interstate near Fairmont, a private home on an organic farm in the Eastern Panhandle, and a corporate headquarters that will never be built.

As wildly divergent as these building projects might seem, they share this: They captured the top honors Saturday at the annual design awards banquet of the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Perhaps not coincidentally, all three were designed as "green" projects, two with the goal of earning LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
