VITAL helicopter operations for Britain's oil and gas industry
will be grounded this weekend after urgent safety checks were
ordered on hundreds of Super Pumas across Europe, following the 1
April disaster in the North Sea in which 16 men died.
The North Sea's entire fleet of Super Puma Mark 2s - the model
involved in the disaster - and the advanced Super Puma EC225, the
type involved in an earlier offshore crash, are to be temporarily
withdrawn from service as part of the Europe-wide safety alert.
More than 1,000 helicopters - including aircraft used in search
and rescue operations - are expected to be affected by the alert.
