An Exeter prison inmate is suspected of setting fire to his own cell causing six people to be taken to hospital.

As reported in yesterday's Echo, police, fire and ambulance crews were called to Exeter Prison just after 8pm on Sunday by prison staff when a fire broke out in the segregation unit.

Five staff were taken by ambulance to the accident and emergency department at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The inmate occupying the cell where the fire started was also taken to hospital. It is not believed that anyone was seriously hurt. Detectives are investigating the fire as suspected arson. They suspect that the fire may have been started deliberately by an ...
