Not everyone can run the steeplechase.

When Marquette University distance coach Mike Nelson is scouting possible runners for the event, he can tell a lot just by watching them run up a hill.

Are they running on their toes? Are their knees high? Do they gracefully bound up the incline?

Ultimately, though, success in the event boils down to intestinal fortitude as much as athleticism. Without the guts, the gifts don't matter.

"They can't be scared of it," he said.

Jayne Grebinski, all 5 feet 2 inches and about 100 pounds of her, fears not.
