Article: Divisions already appearing over Hill District development spurred by new arena

Political squabbling is dogging efforts to sketch out how Hill District homes and businesses will mesh with Pittsburgh's $321 million multipurpose arena.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl joined Councilwoman Tonya Payne on Thursday to begin a yearlong public discussion of goals that range from capitalizing on low-income housing successes in Oak Hill and Crawford-Roberts to drawing Downtown shoppers and pedestrians to the Hill.

The "master planning" process is required by a Hill District community benefits agreement city and county officials signed last year. It guarantees funding for a grocery store and gives Hill residents first opportunity at jobs created around the Consol Energy Center.
