More than 300 researchers in an auditorium stared at the dark MRI image of a woman's brain. They could see along one edge of the skull a small white patch.

"This is not a big tumor," explained John S. Kuo, neurosurgeon and director of the comprehensive brain tumor program at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

A second image: the dark oval of a man's brain, this time dominated by a large white cloud.

"So how much brain can you really take out?" Kuo asked.

He operated on both patients. Six months after surgery, the small tumor roared back. The woman died within a year.

As for the man with the much larger brain tumor, "he's still here after 18 months," Kuo said.
