Article: Jobless rate in Pittsburgh area hits 16-year high, at 7.2 percent

The Pittsburgh region's unemployment rate rose to its highest level in nearly 16 years in March, jumping 0.3 of a percentage point to 7.2 percent, the state said Tuesday.

The increase was the seventh consecutive month of rising unemployment in the seven-county region and was 2.5 percentage points above the March 2008 jobless rate of 4.7 percent, the state said. March's seasonally adjusted jobless rate was the highest since 7.3 percent in October 1993.

A survey of employers shows the region has lost 20,200 jobs in the past year, the state's Center for Workforce Information and Analysis said.
