Article: A traveling man, with orchestra in tow

Jonathan Gorst is proof we are the conductors of our own fate.

The Doherty High School graduate was a piano major at the University of Northern Colorado School of Music in Greeley in the mid-1990s when he saw "Phantom of the Opera" at Denver's Buell Theatre.

"I thought, 'What a great job that would be just to play the keyboard,'" he says.

He didn't get that job, but he's not complaining. He's the orchestra conductor.

He recently finished a month of Phantom performances at the Buell. You just missed him. The final curtain was Sunday.

Gorst, 36, has done big shows from Broadway to Berlin since he left town in 1998 to play keyboard for the musical "Cats."
