Article: Baking cakes for cancer

REDLANDS - Five-year-old Makenna Liess turned her love of baking and cake-decorating television shows into a fundraiser for a Southern California cancer treatment center.

In January, Makenna's uncle, Mark Hemmers of Yucaipa, died of cancer. Makenna was very close to him and wanted to do something in his memory.

"After he died, Makenna told her parents she wanted to raise money for cancer patients like her uncle Mark," said family friend Michelle Adair.

Prior to his death, Hemmers was treated at Premiere Oncology in Santa Monica, where he participated in a clinical trial. The Liess family was planning to donate to Premiere Oncology, but Makenna had an idea of her own.
