Virgil D. Cantini's reputation in the art world was even larger
than the physical size of his later-years' artwork.
Virgil D. Cantini, 90, who went against his mother's wishes and
pursued art as a career, becoming one of Pittsburgh's greatest
adopted artists, died Saturday, May 2, 2009.
Mr. Cantini did numerous works of public art, including "Aerial
Scape," a mural in the lobby of One Oliver Plaza, and "Ode to
Space," a 10-foot sculpture on the University of Pittsburgh campus
dedicated to former Pitt Chancellor Edward Litchfield, who died in a
1965 plane crash.
Mr. Cantini's family migrated to the Pittsburgh area in 1919, and
