The captain of a Boston-based Coast Guard cutter on patrol in the
Caribbean was relieved of his command yesterday after his superior
officer lost confidence in him, Coast Guard officials said last
night.
Commander Howard R. Shaw, in charge of the 270-foot cutter
Escanaba, was removed yesterday from his command while at port in
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Shaw is en route back to Boston to assume
administrative duties at the First District office, said Lieutenant
Commander Rob Wyman, a spokesman for the Coast Guard.
An investigation into the situation has been initiated, but there
is no timetable for its completion, Wyman said in a telephone
interview last night from Portsmouth, Va.
