There's always going to be more than one reason why a pub closes
- the economy, family difficulties, and cultural and social changes
all play a part.
Village pubs can no longer get away with just offering a humble
pint and a packet of pork scratchings. The modern villager wants
more - particularly if they are an out-of-towner with a second home
in the countryside.
So, has this led to the demise of the village pub?
The downward spiral possibly dates back 25 years to the miners'
strike and subsequent pit closures which changed many Welsh villages
forever.
