If David Vartanian hadn't been such a strong swimmer and clung so tightly to the side of a Titanic lifeboat, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

He survived the sinking and went on to have children, grandchildren and a great-granddaughter in Milwaukee named Melissa Vartanian.

She's bringing the family story around full-circle on Friday when she marries Vache Mikaelian in the popular Titanic exhibit at the Milwaukee Public Museum.

I had to ask her. You're beginning this marriage among the artifacts of an ill-fated ship that's become shorthand for disaster. Couldn't this be, um . . . I fumbled for a sensitive word.
