Battered by the foreclosure crisis, the company registered an
$815 million loss during the first three months of 2009. A major,
longtime shareholder of Coca-Cola (whose secret recipe is kept in a
SunTrust vault in Atlanta), the bank sold more than $1 billion of
Coke stock to boost capital reserves in 2008. In addition, SunTrust
has accepted $4.9 billion in federal bailout funds, and the
government now holds nearly $5 billion in preferred shares of its
stock.
