Article: Faith in our MPs is eroded with each damning revelation

The rumours began well before the damaging details of MPs' expenses claims began to emerge.

Last month, it was claimed that three Labour MPs were "terrified" the release of their expense claims, expected to be made by the Commons authorities in July, would expose them as adulterers and financial cheats.

The three un-named backbenchers were even said to have been put on "suicide watch" by Labour whips, who feared they might break down when the details of their excesses come out.

But the general atmosphere among most MPs was one of resignation - rather than panic.

They looked forward to the publication of the claims a bit like a child looks forward to a visit to the dentist.
