BEFORE HE pioneered the Americana jazz movement, before he created a whole new, sustain-heavy sound for the guitar, before he became a leading avant-gardist employing loops, distortion and effects, Bill Frisell just wanted to be a straight-ahead jazz guitarist like his hero and teacher Jim Hall. The teacher and student have reunited for the double album "Hemispheres," with one disc showcasing them as a duo and the other as part of a quartet with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Joey Baron.
