BEFORE HE pioneered the Americana jazz movement, before he
created a whole new, sustain-heavy sound for the guitar, before he
became a leading avant-gardist employing loops, distortion and
effects, Bill Frisell just wanted to be a straight-ahead jazz
guitarist like his hero and teacher Jim Hall. The teacher and
student have reunited for the double album "Hemispheres," with one
disc showcasing them as a duo and the other as part of a quartet
with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Joey Baron.
The quartet disc is a return visit to 1972, when 21-year-old
Frisell was learning jazz standards such as "My Funny Valentine" and
"Sonnymoon for Two" from 41-year-old Hall. Here they meet as equals, ...
