Article: Recession takes toll on children as well

SAN BERNARDINO - Stacy Crosslin isn't sure what big words like "economy" and "recession" mean.

What the 9-year-old does know is that it might be next year before she gets a new pair of shoes, and there are a lot of houses in her neighborhood with "for sale" signs posted on brown lawns.

All of that, combined with worries about the economy that trickle down from the adults in her life, make Crosslin sometimes feel sad and uncertain.

"I feel unhappy because we are never able to go to fun places like the movies, amusement parks or public pools where you have to pay," she said, as she stood on the front porch of the San Bernardino homeless shelter where her mother works.

Stacy isn't alone.
