Article: Daly City students demand moratorium on fast food restaurants

DALY CITY -- Teens who want more healthful food options near Jefferson High School recently approached city officials and asked for a moratorium on new fast-food restaurants.

To add oomph to their proposal, members of the school's Environmental Club on May 11 handed the City Council a petition signed by more than 900 people.

"We're hopeful there will be healthier restaurants," said Christian Villalobos, a ninth-grader. "If they (the council members) decide not to do it, that's OK. We'll come back next year."

The club is counting on the council to follow what officials in Marin County, Watsonville and Chula Vista have done in promoting better nutrition.
