Los Angeles endorses bill imposing fee on plastic bags

LOS ANGELES, May 19 (Xinhua) -- In its latest anti-pollution effort, the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday endorsed a state bill that would institute a 25-cent fee for each plastic bag used by shoppers.

The bill would establish a point-of-sale fee of 25 cents for each plastic bag used by a customer. Of that fee, seven cents would be retained by the store and 18 cents would be forwarded to the state to support anti-pollution and recycling programs.

Last year, the City Council approved a policy to ban plastic bags at all supermarkets and retail stores in Los Angeles ...
