T.S. Ary

T.S. Ary, Director of the Bureau of Mines under Presidents Reagan and Bush, died April 26, 2009, at his home in Arlington, Va.

He was born March 30, 1925, in Eldorado, Ill., and reared in Evansville, Ind. In 1943, he joined the Navy's V-5 program and was commissioned as a Navy pilot. Following his honorable discharge, Mr. Ary attended Stanford University, receiving a BS degree in mining geology in 1951. He held executive positions at Anaconda Copper, Union Carbide, and Utah International Inc. In 1980, Mr. Ary became president of Kerr-McGee Corporation's Minerals Exploration Division, responsible for development in 40 nations.
