Opinion has been divided after Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw's expenses were laid bare in the Echo.

As revealed yesterday, Mr Bradshaw claimed pounds54,000 over the past four years, which included pounds37,000 for mortgage payments, pounds3,000 for cleaning bills and pounds2,500 to fix a broken boiler.

In an open letter to constituents, he insisted he had always kept his costs down, and consistently claimed less than any other MP in Devon and Cornwall, using bicycles and standard travel on trains whenever possible.

Pointing out he had never claimed for items such as food or furniture, the Health Minister said the test for him had always been "What would my constituents think of this?"
