Grand Chute -- Augie Schmidt's Carthage College hitters struggled all day, particularly with runners in scoring position.

His pitchers didn't get the job done, either.

The result was an ugly 8-1 loss Friday to The College of Wooster in the first game of the NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities Stadium.

"I've got to watch what I say, but I'm a little bit embarrassed," Schmidt said. "We didn't play the way we had to play all year to even get to this point . . .

"Right now, I'd have a hard time cashing the NCAA's check for (expletive) sending us here.

"That said, we have another opportunity to show what we can do and show why we're here. We earned it."
